The bit is 20mm thick, measured at the thickest part in the horse's corner of the mouth. It is therefore a rather thick mouthpiece.

For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, cold-blooded horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.

The Pelham is a popular bit with short or long shanks. When the reins are taken up, the bit acts on the mouth, lower jaw, and poll. Depending on the leverage of the shanks, a varying degree of strong and immediate bit angle in the mouth can be achieved. Possible use for horses that have difficulty going on the bit, for "hot" horses, or for horses that need clear intervention in critical situations. The Pelham should only be used by experienced riders.
