Fetlock protection closes the gap between boots and bell boots. To avoid restricting movement, boots should only just enclose the fetlock joint, but must be sufficiently cut away towards the pastern.

Bell boots, on the other hand, end directly above the coronet band, leaving the pastern area unprotected. While it may not appear as vulnerable to striking or overreaching by other hooves as the coronet ridge and the prominent fetlock joint, dangerous injuries can also occur here, especially during very expansive movements such as those performed in cross-country and show jumping competitions.

An ergonomically designed fetlock bandage should be well-padded and breathable, just like boots and bell boots, and should not soak up water when wet. The Kentucky fetlock protector is lined with laminated, perforated neoprene. It is particularly important that it is wide enough to really cover the fetlock area and absolutely does not roll up, as this can easily cause chafing in combination with bell boots.

In addition to its general protective function, fetlock protection can also offer a solution when a horse has to be ridden with boots that don't fit ideally and therefore cause chafing when worn alone. Of course, this should not actually happen with good boots, but sometimes unusual anatomical conditions mean that there are simply no perfectly fitting boots.

Pony riders, in particular, know this problem... With delicate fetlocks, bell boots are often not tight enough to close, and as a result, they twist when worn. Fetlock protection can help here, as can for Icelandic horse riders who use weighted bell boots, which also frequently cause chafing.
