The horseflies are attracted by the dark, sun-warmed rubber ball, because they can only see similarly to a thermal imaging camera. After realizing that it is not a supposed victim, due to their poor flight technique, the horseflies can only fly upwards and are guided by the umbrella above into the collection container and caught.
Recommended use:
For maximum success, position the trap in the flight paths of the horseflies between the preferred wetlands (e.g. pond, riverbank, etc.), but also forests, cornfields, etc., and the bothered horses or people, tending to be spatially closer to the bothered victims. One horsefly trap is recommended for a maximum of 5 horses. The trap should be set up shortly before the female horseflies emerge (from approx. April). Check the trap regularly and empty or refill the collection container with soapy water. If the catch rate is insufficient, please first check the location. Make sure that horses do not chew on the umbrella, etc.
